Dear rabbit brood,
huddled deep beneath a mound
of branches and leaves
recently cleared from the back field,
please feed beneath the cover of darkness,
alongside that gang of squirrels.
When the lights go on in the house,
it means the dogs will be let out soon.
And in the light of day,
there’s no telling when they will rip
across the yard towards you.
So please take care.
I could not bear to find
a broken body
lying emptied of breath and blood
on the snow
that is falling now,
in soft hushes on the yard,
come to feed.
