They Come Later

They come later.

Hard to leave

the roosting beds,

for air of ice,

and wind

like blasts of steel,

that they must

push against,

to reach,

suet and seed.

But they do come.

Staying longer to feed.

Holding still,

retrieving warmth,

from tiny bodies,

metabolism fast,

and to the point.

Every day,

I do what I can,

to keep them,

coming back.
