My Body Knows

My body knows:

warmer now.

Waking to

the same house,

same dogs,

more snow,

and warmer now.

Before coffee,

feedings,

or words,

I step outside,

with seed and shovel

and feel the chill receding.

My muscles sigh,

no tensing against crackling breath,

and for the time it takes

to lift the weightless white

off the narrow path,

I can feel

what is to come:

the thaw,

singing earth.

My body knows.
