Our Mother, Gone: Part I

Our mother,

gone,

before she arrived,

her life shaped by parents,

who went by the book,

not by the heart.

Demanding.

Expecting.

Judging.

Unconditional distance.

We tried to love her,

the need too endless

to be sated,

by children.

So we became wary,

turning away

from her attempts

at expressing.

And when she left us,

to our father’s care,

we felt relief,

as well as grief,

for guilt

had taken the place,

of what

could have been love.

We tried,

we did,

to find a way in.

But Mom,

you were already gone.
