Beyond Their Reach

One horse,

a pasture large,

 newly scented

with grasses

to run through.

One dog,

tethered fast,

to a post,

in a yard,

that promises outcomes,

only dogs will ever know.

Overhead,

one goose,

crossing the sky

in search of a

soft water landing.

And I am

lead into battered sadness.

They are alone,

perhaps lonely,

and I am hoping,

with whatever hope is capable

of doing,

that loneliness,

is a feeling,

beyond their reach.
