In Such a Rain

How do moths fly

in such a rain?

Winds,

driven hard

by miles of lake

and open sky,

propel the drops

in slanting descent,

wild and fierce

against the windows,

and there,

straight out,image

just a few feet

from me,

a moth,

maybe

headed home,

or

blown off course,

trying to find

a place to land

away from the storm,

and me,

cheering it onwards,

a moth

I never would have noticed,

but for this storm,

wild and fierce

against the windows,

as gray light rises

in this lake world.
