Michele: Happy Birthday

A seven year stretch,

between us,

and with loss,

(such broken souls),

we’ve had to

redefine ourselves,

again and again.

What endures is this:

I was gone,

really gone,

to a land without trees,

daring the edges

of life and death,

and you dreamed of that land,

as if you were there with me,

sharing that edge,

both of us staying.

We’ve laughed,

to the point of deep collapse,

our love of the absurd,

a balm,

for wounds,

only we

can understand.

And Michele,

you will always be,

my baby sister,

that definition,

will never change,

but I must,

aspiring to be,

who won’t go so far away,

any more.
