So Close

Sometimes,

so close,

the way in,

the way out,

morning light,

in subdued shades,

a curtain of mist,

so sheer,

it’s almost not there

at all.

Then,

a moment,

the cardinal,

blood-pulse red,

lands on the wire,

just outside the window,

and I am startled

awake,

suddenly so close,

to a way,

of believing that,

there is no curtain,

at all.
