The Dark Sleep

Yesterday,

the dogs and I

went into the hills,

behind the house,

I wore the wrong shoes,

almost falling,

negotiation over

broken tree limbs,

sliding leaves,

hidden stones,

almost tripping,

but I didn’t,

the dogs and I

needing the deeper calling,

of the hidden world,

diffused light,

murky crevices,

that hold

the last trickle of autumn,

sinking back and away,

the dark sleep,

coming.
